During the 19th and early 20th centuries, state governments dominated American government. In the mid-1900’s, the role of the federal government in public policy making expanded to a great extent while the role of state governments diminished. Now, well into the 21st century, state and local governments are once again working in a new partnership with the federal government. This course will survey the structure, function, operation, policies and problems of American state and local governments. Students will gain an understanding of the way state and local governments function and the role of the states within the American political system.
